At least 13 people perish and 98 injured in train crash in Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.

The crash took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We will rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” stated the head of state.

The leader announced that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose term concluded the previous year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant growth of its role in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, defying forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had concurrently fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough technical review. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and operation of these national projects.
