Australia's captain Poised for a Significant Contribution in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has secured 309 wickets in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

Australia's chief selector Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not just the physical problem, but further aspects," the selector added.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Previous Setbacks

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

There is a track record of back injuries, with setbacks in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to secure his spot for the series.

Bailey noted that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to regain fitness for the first Test.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from Australia's squad for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to resume bowling."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the opening match as an all-rounder," Bailey explained.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games in any case. The way he swings the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
