The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.
Competitors will gain the option to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.
This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.
This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Competitors cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or person during play.
- Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Importantly, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.
A Recent Example
A recent case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
